Hi Nash welcome to the forum. Barston Lakes isnt far from you, it has quite a few 20s in, mind you, you will have to catch your fair share of 5 - 8lb ers first lol.
someone has got to ask you- What bait do you use?

As for barston i fished it a few times last year i fished the side you can drive down right at the very bottom and your right i have my fair share of 5lb carp but i was only using 10mm boilies would i get better results from bigger carp by making my bait bigger

Not 100% of the time. If the smaller carp cant fit it in their mouths they will still have a go at it and nudge it round the bottom of the lake.
As for bait have a look through the bait section theres some good topics in there for a few ideas. <!-- s:idea: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_idea.gif" alt="

Welcome to WBM pal.
Use whatever bait you have confidence in, experiment a bit with it until you find what you like and get better results on. Carp will take alot of bait and i wouldnt say there is one bait that will catch you any more or bigger carp than the others.
As Ben says bigger baits dont mean bigger fish, carp do have very large mouths so can take most baits even when only 5lb.
